Support for new and expectant mothers

Perinatal mental health team service user who is a new mother holding a newborn baby

If you are looking for support for a child or young person, please visit our dedicated Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services pages.

Having a baby can be an extremely stressful time for mothers and some might need the support of our specialist perinatal mental health service.

You could receive treatment from the team if you’re a woman who is currently pregnant or has given birth within the last 12 months.

We give specialist interventions to women who are experiencing a moderate to severe mental health problem such as:

If you have a serious mental illness that pre-exists your pregnancy, we’ll work alongside the team currently responsible for your care to give advice on management and treatment.

You may already have a diagnosis, or a vulnerability to develop a psychiatric illness but be considering a pregnancy. In this case, we can provide pre-conception advice.

We also act as a liaison between our team and maternity, primary care and psychiatric services.

The perinatal team is a varied bunch, made up of advanced and specialist nurses, consultant psychiatrists, cognitive behavioural therapists and more.

We provide this service in partnership with the Humber NHS Teaching Foundation Trust and Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust.

How can I access the perinatal mental health service?

Referrals to the specialist perinatal mental health team (for women registered with a GP in North East Lincolnshire) can only be accepted from a healthcare professional who is involved with the women’s care.

If you're a healthcare professional who would like to refer someone, please visit the Every Mum Matters website.

You can discuss the perinatal mental health service with professionals involved in your care, such as your GP, midwife or health visitor.

They will be able to offer you support and refer you to an appropriate service.

You can also request a referral to the perinatal mental health service through the 24/7 Single Point of Access.

Call (01472) 256256 and select option 3.

If you’re in a mental health crisis and need urgent help, call the Single Point of Access on (01472) 256256 and select option 3. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Alternatively, you can call NHS 111 free from a landline or mobile phone.
